Ostinato – Katherine Gekker

When my skull collided with
granite, my brain bounced.
Now, I stumble over hard consonants.
Patient friends lean closer.
My piano teacher says
You’re not stammering. You’re
adding musical flourishes –
trills, grace
and bent blues notes.

Two series of Katherine Gekker’s poems have been set to music. “…to Cast a Shadow Again” and “Chasing the Moon Down” are available on CD and iTunes. Other poems have been published, or are forthcoming, in Little Patuxent Review, Broadkill Review, Panoply, Northern Virginia Review, and other journals. Her first book of poetry will be published by Glass Lyre Press in 2019. When not writing, she plays piano. She can be reached through www.katherinegekker.com.
